1. Procedure

1.1 Pre-Shift Preparation

  1. Check Weather Reports: Review the forecast and plan routes based on snow accumulation and client priority. Check your Jobber schedule for the most updated route.

  2. Inspect Equipment:

    • Perform a walk-around check of the vehicle and plow.

    • Verify fuel levels, tire pressure, and fluid levels.

    • Test lights, plow hydraulics, and salt spreaders.

  3. Load Supplies: Stock de-icing materials and ensure all tools are secured.

  4. Review Route Assignments: Each operator should understand their assigned route and priority clients.

 

1.2 Plowing Operations

  1. Arrival at the Site:

    • Turn on strobe light to ensure visibility.

  2. Plow Setup: Adjust the blade angle for optimal clearing based on the site layout:

    • Straight Blade: General clearing.

    • Angled Blade: Pushing snow to one side.

  3. Plowing Technique:

    • Begin with main driveways and high-traffic areas.

    • Clear to the edges of the property while avoiding damage to curbs and landscaping.

    • Avoid creating snow piles in areas that obstruct visibility or access.

  4. Sidewalk/Walkway Clearing:

    1. Push snow to the sides to minimize lifting.

      1. Use proper lifting techniques when necessary: bend at the knees and lift with your legs.

      2. Avoid piling snow in areas that obstruct pedestrian traffic or doorways.

    2. Snow Blowers:

      1. Operate only on sidewalks and walkways where space allows.

      2. Adjust the chute to direct snow away from entryways, landscaping, and vehicles.

      3. Use slow, steady passes to ensure thorough clearing.

  5. De-Icing:

    • Evenly spread salt or sand over cleared surfaces.

    • Avoid over-application to minimize environmental impact.

1.3 Post-Shift Procedures

  1. Inspect Equipment: Check for wear and tear; clean and refuel vehicles.

    • Always wear a seatbelt.

    • Operate at safe speeds, especially in icy or low-visibility conditions.

    • Use warning lights to ensure visibility to others.

  2. Property Safety:

    • Be cautious near mailboxes, curbs, and landscaping.

    • Avoid piling snow in front of entryways or near fire hydrants.

  3. Employee Safety:

    • Take breaks to prevent fatigue.

    • Stay hydrated and dress appropriately for cold weather.

    • Use proper lifting techniques when shoveling.

3. Emergency Procedures

  1. Accidents or Equipment Failure:

    • Pull over safely and notify the supervisor immediately.

    • Use hazard lights and place warning cones if necessary.

  2. Severe Weather Conditions:

    • Follow updated routes or instructions from the supervisor.

    • Prioritize safety over speed.
