Pre-Shift Procedure

  • Inspection:

    • Check salt supply levels and replenish as necessary.

    • Inspect spreaders (manual or mechanical) for proper functionality and calibration.

    • Ensure walkways and surfaces are clear of large debris before application.

  • Preparation:

    • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety glasses, and slip-resistant footwear.

    • Identify high-risk areas such as entrances, ramps, stairs, and heavily trafficked pathways.

Operation

  • Manual Salting:

    • Use a scoop or spreader for even distribution.

    • Apply salt in a consistent pattern, avoiding excessive accumulation in any one area.

    • Focus on high-traffic zones and areas prone to ice buildup.

    • Avoid salting near vegetation to minimize damage.

  • Mechanical Spreader Use:

    • Set spreader calibration according to the required salt application rate.

    • Start moving before engaging the spreader to ensure even distribution.

    • Adjust chute direction to prevent salt from being thrown onto grass, vehicles, or sensitive areas.

    • Monitor application to avoid waste and excessive buildup.

  • Application Best Practices:

    • If applying brine or liquid de-icer, ensure even coverage and allow time for it to take effect.

    • Reapply as needed, especially in high-traffic areas or after snowfall.

Post-Shift Procedure

  • Cleanup and Storage:

    • Empty and clean spreaders to prevent clogging and corrosion.

    • Store unused salt in a dry, covered area to prevent clumping.

    • Properly dispose of any excess or contaminated salt.

    • Report any equipment malfunctions or restocking needs.

Safety Guidelines

  • Always wear appropriate PPE, including gloves and slip-resistant footwear.

  • Do not overfill spreaders to avoid strain and spills.

  • Be cautious of icy surfaces while walking and applying salt.

  • Keep hands and loose clothing away from moving parts of mechanical spreaders.

  • Use caution when applying salt near water sources or sensitive environments.

Emergency Procedures

  • Equipment Malfunction:

    • If a spreader stops working, inspect for jams or mechanical issues.

    • Do not attempt repairs while the spreader is running.

    • Notify a supervisor  if necessary.

  • Injury:

    • In case of an injury, stop operation immediately.

    • Provide first aid as needed and call for medical assistance if required.

    • Report all incidents to the supervisor.

  • Salt Spill or Contamination:

    • If excessive salt is spilled, sweep it up to prevent environmental damage.

    • In case of contamination (e.g., salt mixed with debris), dispose of it according to local regulations.

Training and Compliance

  • Operators must be trained in proper salting techniques and equipment use.

  • Periodic refresher training should be conducted.

  • Operators must adhere to company policies and local regulations regarding salt application and environmental protection.
