Pre-Shift Procedure

  • Inspection:

    • Check all equipment, including bagger mowers, leaf vacuums, and backpack blowers, for proper functionality.

    • Inspect fuel levels and oil levels.

    • Verify that dump trailers are secure and properly connected to tow vehicles.

  • Preparation:

    • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.

    • Plan the removal pattern to ensure efficiency and avoid unnecessary rework.

    • Identify areas of high leaf accumulation and potential hazards such as hidden obstacles or wet surfaces.

Operation

  • Using a Bagger Mower:

    • Adjust the mower deck to an appropriate height to maximize leaf collection.

    • Mow in overlapping passes to collect as many leaves as possible.

    • Empty the bagger regularly to prevent clogging and maintain efficiency.

    • Avoid mowing over large sticks or debris that may damage the mower or bagging system.

  • Using a Leaf Vacuum Connected to a Dump Trailer:

    • Position the vacuum hose at the base of leaf piles for maximum efficiency.

    • Avoid overloading the vacuum system to prevent clogging.

    • Ensure that leaves are evenly distributed in the dump trailer to avoid tipping hazards.

    • Periodically check and clear the vacuum intake and hose to maintain proper airflow.

    • Secure the dump trailer properly before transporting.

  • Using Backpack Leaf Blowers:

    • Start blowing leaves from building edges and landscaped areas towards a central pile.

    • Work in a coordinated manner with other crew members to avoid scattering leaves unnecessarily.

    • Use lower power settings near delicate plants or windows to prevent damage.

    • Avoid directing leaves into roadways, storm drains, or water sources.

Post-Shift Procedure

  • Cleanup and Equipment Maintenance:

    • Properly dispose of collected leaves at designated compost or disposal sites.

    • Clean leaf vacuums, bagger mowers, and blowers to prevent clogging and buildup.

    • Check and refuel gas-powered equipment for the next use.

    • Inspect all equipment for damage or maintenance needs and report any issues.

    • Store equipment in a secure and dry location.

  • Environmental Considerations:

    • Avoid piling leaves near storm drains or bodies of water to prevent pollution.

    • Use mulching options where possible to promote soil health.

Safety Guidelines

  • Always wear PPE, including hearing and eye protection.

  • Be aware of pedestrians and vehicles when using blowers near roads or walkways.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive vibrations from equipment.

  • Ensure all equipment is turned off before performing maintenance.

  • Never operate a leaf blower, vacuum, or mower near flammable materials.

Emergency Procedures

  • Equipment Malfunction:

    • Turn off the machine immediately if it malfunctions.

    • Inspect for visible issues but do not attempt repairs beyond basic troubleshooting.

    • Report all malfunctions to maintenance personnel.

  • Injury:

    • Stop work immediately in case of injury.

    • Provide first aid as needed and call for medical assistance if necessary.

    • Report all injuries to a supervisor.

  • Fire or Fuel Spill:

    • If fuel spills, contain and clean it immediately using absorbent materials.

    • In case of fire, use an extinguisher if safe to do so and evacuate the area.

    • Follow company protocols for handling hazardous materials.

Training and Compliance

  • Workers must be trained in proper leaf removal techniques and equipment use.

  • Periodic refresher training should be conducted.

  • Operators must adhere to company policies and local regulations regarding leaf disposal and noise control.
